We believe in fewer, truer objects. At our shop there are no batches - every piece of furniture is made-to-order. Along with you, we design beautifully useful and sustainable solutions that may be heirlooms of the future. The BFA workshop is located in Boulder, CO - on traditional lands of Ute, Arapaho and Cheyenne peoples. We acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded, and we pay our respects to elders past, present, and emerging.
Services
Five craftsmen and women agreed that the Boulder identity should live on through authentic woodcraft, as so many of the world's beautiful places have since antiquity.
They created a uniquely thoughtful and memorably authentic client-to-craftsperson approach, and today the mighty nine of us are proud to make up one of Boulder's oldest local businesses.
Natural materials don't guarantee quality: sourcing and business impacts share equally in the endurance of an object.
Commitment to the highest standards of sustainability is non-negotiable.
The process is surprisingly easy, beginning with one-on-one time with Hannah and/or Lee.
Either way, an expert in Shaker style, furniture construction, scale/proportion, and the industry's "standard" guidelines will be right by your side.
DESIGN | Start from any of our designs, then specify size and choose a wood species.
Select from options specific to your type of piece, from tabletop thickness to headboard height.
Example | Popular options include the rail-style footboard, 24 table expansion leaf and inlaid turquoise.
From the trees, we create homes, heat, books, spices, and our best furniture.
Each finished piece reflects intimate familiarity with natural wood and deference to its inherent qualities.
All wood is Forest Stewardship Council-Certified sustainable or salvaged from dead, diseased or damaged trees.
Wood is kiln-dried for Colorado's high desert climate.
We do not stain or spray our furniture.
Read about our hand-rubbed oil finish here.
Like water to a fish, our finish gives wood what it wants in order to be its healthiest, most naturally beautiful and long-lasting self.
Eco-friendly ingredients, old-fashioned methods, and easy, at-home maintenance.
Ingredients: The colorless, low-VOC finish is old-school: made from natural Tung tree and Linseed oils (used to finish fine woods since the days of Confucius).
The oil hardens within the wood, and remains flexible to accommodate natural movement across the seasons.
Process: Infuse the wood pores with repeated, thin coats of oil, applied by hand using rags.
Each of us here at BFA is a student of nature.
In keeping with our love for the environment we live in, we do not compromise on practical and environmental principles that are commonly neglected within our industry.
Using responsible methods and sustainable materials in all aspects of our work, we defy an industry of mass-produced, factory-finished furniture.
Renewable, natural material is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified sustainably grown or locally salvaged.
Locally salvaged Beetlekill Blue Pine comes from standing dead trees, transformed into fine furniture as part of grand-scale local forest sustainability efforts, focusing on fire prevention and carbon management.
