As a young girl, my life was filled with a lot of change.
I coped with this by using my imagination to conjure places that were filled with imagination and fun.
I constantly created worlds that expressed who I was and who I wanted to be-spaces I felt drawn to like a magnet, that I never wanted to leave.
I thought of this process as Design with a capital "D."
I had an unquenchable thirst for all of it, imagining and building things that I could understand and feel.
So it's not surprising that I majored in electrical engineering and interior design, or that I studied architecture at Taliesin.

When you engage with a truly custom-designed piece, you sense more the longer and deeper you look.
The shape.
The texture.
The character.
You feel something.
We know the importance of connection.
We know what happens to a baby who is never touched-how it stunts growth, development and the ability to feel and express joy.
Yet when you order a mass-produced chair, there's a good chance that it has never been touched by human hands until the moment you pull it out of the box.
If you truly care about the environment, you should want something to last, not get chucked into a landfill.

Yantras date back to ancient India and are considered sacred geometric symbols.
As the visual version of a mantra, Yantras are about healing-reminding you of your capacity for love, generosity and greatness.
Jaque Bethke created her own Yantra symbol because triangles symbolize her three-part background in architecture, engineering and design, and because she has always seen her work as a sacred, healing art form.
To Jaque, great design isn't about begging for acceptance or seeking mass appeal.

The Jaque Effect applies to any collection in any industry: creating spaces with a magical ability to reflect their creators and embrace their occupants.
I work with extraordinary people and brands, so my designs have to reflect that.
I refuse to develop 'off the shelf' lifestyle products like the ones you see on Amazon and Wayfair.
Those are designed for mass appeal.
I strive for one-of-a-kind products made from scratch that perfectly fit the specific space and convey a unique message.
Modern residential design can be cold and impersonal.

It is not a coincidence that your personal values are reflected in every choice you make in life including your spaces.
My mentor Steve Wynn said The difference between winners and losers is that a winner is willing to walk away a winner.
As 2019 comes to a close, we're all hustling around trying to make sure we don't forget anyone and that we get.
I'm often asked how I come up with "all those crazy ideas, " and I usually have no answer-no clear or concise response.
Someone once told me that even if you have a great product at a fair price, that doesn't mean you'll be profitable.
