9:00am on a Sunday morning. John calls me:Do you repair furniture. I want to be ready for Thanksgiving. Sure: I jump in the car to inspect each piece and give a realistic opinion of how much time would be necessary to ensure the integrity of the chairs, the need to refinish a table before the holidays parties. The visit revealed the need for one armchair arm that needs tightening before the holiday's sit-down dinner.

This is a "new" construction all held by nuts and bolts instead of tenons. Some Allen bolts need to be taken care of at the seat/arm joint. Bot the arm is attached to the back with a "barrel" bolt. Three chairs were retightened with bolts. However, one of the armchairs had to be taken back to the shop. A new floating tenon had to be created because the upholstery covered the original break.

After a day's work and clamping, John and his family had the chair ready for the celebration. We are using this post to test the email generation of notification when publishing a new post.

The original piece had been eaten by worms.
Extensive damage and breakage incurred by its re-localization from a temperate climate environment in France to over heated and refrigerated New York apartment.
We re-glued some parts and created new mortises in the stiles.
New shelf supports were made, respecting the seasonal movements and the structural stress incurred by the load of heavy books.
Discoloration, broken tablet and loose feet.
Restoration included re-staining of the top hide, glazing of the wood and four coats of water based polyurethane.
Damage to a chair can happen when a seated person leans back and balances on the back legs, causing the back frame to break over the seat itself.
Front legs can also break below the seat.
This often occurs when the chair is slid over a carpet without the person using his or her legs to release pressure.
I often receive a piece on which repairs have previously been made inadequately, with screws or pins and worse, with the wrong glue.
The following example is one of these cases.
Previously the chair had been repaired with Gorilla glue.
