Underbark Furniture Workshop
Creating wood furniture extends the already long life of what some would call the noblest life form on earth: trees. Wood has soul. I love shaping it into something that becomes part of a family. A work of passion, that contributes to the comfort and beauty of a living space and that passes from generation to generation, reminding us of our roots.

Wood: Pliant. Permanent. Warm. Strong. Beautiful. Powerful. Full of soul. In the forests they form a private community, joining in chorus with the wind and birds with a quite peaceful strength as we pass beneath. Something built by hand with skill and care and pride, has a depth and strength-yes, and soul-that mass-produced goods cannot match. I create furniture that your grandchildren will cherish.
Services
I work closely with my customers to create just the right design for a bed, a dresser, a bedside table, a complete set-so the beauty from under the bark reflects their personal style; so the soul of the tree joins the soul of the living space.
Because of the handmade nature of my furniture, time to complete an order can vary, from 2-6 months depending on order size and backlog.
Although most clients order existing Underbark furniture designs, I can modify them to taste or need, or work from photos or rough sketches to create custom designs.
A great chair defines great design.
This is where form meets function, visual appeal coexists with utility.
Underbark chairs are, like all of my furniture, made of North American hardwoods (primarily black cherry, but I can work with any wood you request) in a style I call "New Mission"-Arts and Crafts with a contemporary spin.
At Underbark, I design every piece to blend comfort and function with pleasing aesthetics and proportion.
I strive to create furniture you'll want to be in and around for generations.
Tables provide us with surfaces for living.
Whether for human activities or for display and placement of objects, tables provide a wonderful showcase for the natural, almost mystical beauty of wood.
This is where my process comes to the fore.
Careful selection of materials; honest, timehonored joinery techniques; expert finishing.
Attention to the smallest of details brings real uniqueness and enduring value to my handmade furniture.
When you see it, you'll understand.
Note: All dimensions are inches.
Solid wood, solid construction.
Handmade feel.
Many of the pieces I create are for holding your possessions-whether clothing, books, dishware or audio-visual equipment-with style.
Underbark wardrobes, bookcases and dressers make a beautiful statement in the space they inhabit, lending warmth and character to the room.
Full extension hidden drawer slides, solid maple dovetail drawers, book-matched door panels, inner lower shelf.
Shoot-thru door, asian qquare spindle doors, adjustable shelves for electronic components, vented removable back.
I bring more than 39 years of experience to the art of furniture making.
Because of my father's work, our family lived in Europe during my childhood-I was schooled in the industrial arts in Germany and attended the London College of Furniture, graduating with a Furniture Craft Certificate in 1974.
I founded Underbark in 1981.
Today, I live and build furniture on nine acres of forest in northern Michigan.
It's my life's work to make lasting and special furniture for the home, office or cottage.
