The original Sanders Furniture location was established in Commerce, Georgia in 1913 when M.T. Sanders purchased the J.J. Shephard Company that had been in operation for 50 years. The late Mr. Sanders began his career selling furniture from trucks and is credited with the originating the "dollar down, dollar a week" plan in North Georgia. The business grew and in the late 1920's branches were opened at Monroe and Winder and at Buford and Elberton in the 1930's respectively.
