Green River Woods is a small woodworking studio and urban wood salvage operation in Asheville, NC. From milling our own slabs to producing our own finish, we work with clients all over the country to design and build custom furniture. We value environmental sustainability, craftsmanship, new tools and challenges, and enduring form and function. Working cooperatively within a dedicated community of local arborists, sawyers, fellow woodworkers, and metalworkers, we strive to make creative and best use of fallen trees.
We also make Bee Good Wood Oil, a premium food safe wood finish, one small batch at a time. By popular demand, our Bee Good Wood Butter is now also a small good thing-in-the-world, ideal for turned items and available in a variety of sizes, and stores: 100% natural and easy-to-apply fine wood protection. Be good to your wood, and support local beekeepers.

Services
Green River Woods was founded by Matt back in 2008.
Matt grew up in southern Vermont along a very green river in the post and beam saltbox home designed by his parents.
His dad was a Thoreau scholar who loved being in the woods.
Matt began working as a carpenter in the summers from the age of 13, with forays into literature and philosophy in college and salmon fishing in Alaska, before moving on to trim and custom cabinetry in Asheville in 2005.
His family has roots in Asheville going back to 1870.

When a piece of furniture is built to last from a log that would otherwise be mulched, not only do we get to experience its unique beauty but also all the carbon that tree absorbed over a lifetime remains out of our atmosphere, helping fight climate disaster.
Western North Carolina is a uniquely privileged area for hardwoods, and of course the evolution of forestry.
We work with neighbors, preservation-minded arborists and a variety of sawyers and kilns in the greater Asheville area to salvage lumber from trees that are either storm-damaged or must come down.

Our custom butcher block island top crafted by Matt and Green River Woods is a living work of art.
For five years it's graced our kitchen island and with every cut and indentation it becomes more beautiful.
It is a great conversation piece for our guests, especially when I'm breaking down large cuts of meat on it.
I know it will outlast us and I'm envious of the next generation that gets to enjoy it.
With our kitchen remodel, we wanted the new island to be the focal point and it became that thanks to the cherry butcher block counter top Matt Christie created.
