Unbridled creativity for your project, regardless of scale. Handmade and signed by Nico Yektai from his studio in Sag Harbor, NY in the heart of the Hamptons. Nico Yektai is the creative force behind the handmade art furniture on this website. Trained in both art and craftsmanship, Yektai is uniquely able to explore and push the boundaries of modern furniture.

Yektai is constantly designing and making new pieces of furniture, many of which are available for immediate purchase. If the piece is not available then it can serve as the starting point for a commission. All of the furniture on this website is unique and one-of-a-kind so feel free to ask about custom orders. Each component within these pieces of functional art furniture has its own identity.

Sometimes they push away from their neighbors in a way that calls attention to themselves while other pieces subtly shift to balance the composition. The energy that this sort of construction captures helps make these functional pieces of contemporary custom furniture seductive from afar and more engaging the closer you get.

I have looked at the best online furniture stores and online furniture catalogs in an effort to understand what made them so effective.
At their best they gave the viewer the tools to understand the piece of furniture that they were looking at.
This is a nice idea, but not quite right for my work.
My work is composed in the round and as a result the best way to understand all of the levels of intricacy is to view it in person.
I had seen smaller objects that were presented in the round as annoying animations that constantly rotated.
The modern bench is more than a versatile piece of furniture, it is a wonderful platform for functional sculpture.
I came to this realization early in my career when I was working on a commission for a bench for a very modern New York city foyer.
Benches quickly became an obsession of mine and I began my first numbered series.
Since then I have ventured into the great outdoors with a second numbered series of benches.
Both series are ongoing and chart my evolution in terms of form and material.
This series was born of a commission for a sculptural entryway bench.
The piece was the second bench that I had made and became the first in my ongoing numbered series of one-of-a-kind benches.
Since then I have expanded my approach from thinking in terms of entry benches to thinking of benches for public spaces.
As always, the beauty of handmade wooden furniture is that any moment in any bench can serve as the starting point for a commission.
Commissions are great because they become a collaboration that results in the perfect size, shape and material for your needs.
I started this exploration of contemporary outdoor benches when my indoor benches started to get too large for the average home.
The lure of the outside bench is the limitless scale and the possibility of public placement that the series can now reach towards.
The benches in this series differ from my other benches in two important ways.
The finish and underlying wood is calibrated towards surviving the the great outdoors.
The introduction of Cast Concrete is integral to my approach to the modern outdoor bench as it gives me a durable and maintenance free material.
A 10' dining table and a 20 end table both conjure up the same expectations of a usable surface- the very essence of a table.
My work has evolved to satisfy that function but challenging the viewers expectations along the way.
Table tops are often pierced, boards shift to interrupt the flat plane and shapes squash and elongate from their geometric starting point.
The under structure of the table is addressed in the same way and I consider it my purpose to integrate the legs into the form of the table.
